John & Preeni’s Story

Married for more than four decades, John, 75, and Preeni, 69 are simply two peas in a pod.

Their love for great food and documentaries, as well as social activities, have created a loving and fulfilled family home in Wollert. In recent years, Preeni, has experienced a number of health difficulties including arthritis and was recently diagnosed with confused mind syndrome.  While Preeni’s challenges of forgetfulness and repetition, as well as being reliant on a walking frame, have been setbacks for the couple, they continue to join forces to create a life that is full and vibrant.

John’s first connection with LINK began in 2018, when he had a knee replacement performed at Northern Hospital.  LINK Community and Transport was able to provide John with the transport he need to get to his medical appointments post-surgery.

Then a horrific car accident in 2020, which saw John and Preeni’s car classified a ride off, was the light bulb moment for John to decide to give up driving for good.  And with that, John and Preeni’s connection with LINK strengthened.

Link’s role

Friends and social connections are the lifeblood for John and Preeni. And whether it is going to the shops for groceries, attending medical appointment or going for a day out to regional Victoria, this fills their cup in living fruitful lives that is enjoyable and with currency.

According to John, the LINK team has had their back since day one, not only with their transportation needs but also reaching out on a regular basis, especially during COVID. “It was always such a pleasant surprise to pick up the phone during those uncertain times and hear a warm and familiar voice on the other end.  We really enjoyed our talks with LINK, sharing our stories on gardening and detective shows on the TV.

“Laughter in all its forms is priceless and the LINK team always has the time to create those special happy moments in their stories.  And now post lock down, Preeni and I have the pleasure in catching up with the LINK team in person.  Face to face connection is always the best.”

A testament to LINK’s tireless commitment to their clients was seen last Christmas Day where John and Preeni needed transport to get to Mill Park to see Preeni’s brother Ranjith.  One of LINK’s dedicated volunteers, Alna, was there front and centre to make this happen so John and Preeni could enjoy their day with loved ones.

Moving forward

John and Preeni continue to look forward to booking outings with LINK, creating wonderful memories and friendships along the way.

“I love researching about new spots to visit or to dine at so LINK may consider it for the next outing and it is also a great way for me to get more involved. “Having met some of the LINK regulars in our catch ups, you get to know what they enjoy, so I like to recommend different activities so we all get to experience them.”

For John, one word sums up LINK Transport and Community. And that is authenticity. And for each day, that authenticity translates to premium community service.
